Brand Concept

Established in Birsfelden, Switzerland in 1950 by Willi and Erika Fehlbaum, Vitra operates on the conviction that good design improves the quality of life and that the best design is both practically and aesthetically enduring. Treating designers as 'authors' rather than employees, Vitra collaborates with independent creative talent worldwide to produce furniture for home, office, and public spaces that forgoes stylistic trends and remains relevant across generations.

Signature Products

  • Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman 1956 Designed by Charles and Ray Eames; combining molded plywood shells with leather cushions, now in MoMA's permanent collection, produced by Vitra for Europe.
  • Panton Chair 1967 Designed by Verner Panton; the world's first single-piece cantilevered chair made entirely from injection-molded plastic, a landmark of 20th-century industrial design.
  • Eames Plastic Armchair (DAR) 1950 Designed by Charles and Ray Eames; one of the first mass-produced fiberglass shell chairs, conceived for MoMA's Low-Cost Furniture competition.
