Brand Concept

Founded in Meda, Italy in 1966 by Piero Ambrogio Busnelli, B&B Italia pioneered the use of cold-molded polyurethane foam in furniture production—a material innovation underpinning the brand's philosophy of producing pieces that are valuable in time: boldly contemporary in form, technically rigorous in manufacture, and durable enough to remain culturally relevant across decades. The company reinvests more than 3% of annual sales into research and development and has collaborated with designers including Mario Bellini, Gaetano Pesce, Antonio Citterio, and Patricia Urquiola.

Signature Products

  • Serie UP (UP5/6 'La Mamma') 1969 Designed by Gaetano Pesce; polyurethane foam chairs vacuum-packed into flat PVC envelopes that expand to full size on opening—a landmark of conceptual furniture design in MoMA's collection.
  • Camaleonda 1970 Designed by Mario Bellini; a fully modular sofa system connected by cables, hooks, and rings that can be reconfigured endlessly, a star of MoMA's 1972 exhibition 'Italy: The New Domestic Landscape.'
  • Le Bambole 1972 Designed by Mario Bellini; a soft, rounded armchair and sofa series whose generous upholstered forms earned the Compasso d'Oro in 1979.
